CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

I started my General Surgery training in Greece, at the Department of Surgical Oncology, University Hospital of Heraklion, Crete, which is a large regional teaching hospital with A&E Department and a Tertiary Referral Centre for the region of Crete.

As a trainee I had the opportunity to participate, perform and assist to a broad spectrum of elective and emergency operations under the supervision of consultant surgeons. The Surgical Oncology Department in which I worked was mainly orientated towards the treatment of colorectal, breast, thyroid and ovarian cancers, melanoma and soft tissue sarcomas as well as bariatric surgery. I had exposure to the surgical treatment of all these conditions.

After my specialization in General Surgery I was trained further in laparoscopic and bariatric surgery in the Surgical Department of the Krankenhaus Sachsenhausen, Frankfurt a.M., Germany (Prof. R. Weiner, previous IFSO president).

From July 2009 till August 2011 I was working as Locum Consultant in the Department of Surgical Oncology, Heraklion University Hospital Crete Greece. I performed a significant number of emergency and elective operations. My main fields of interest were laparoscopic and bariatric surgery as well as breast surgery.

In March 2012 I was awarded by the Medical School of the University of Crete, PhD title with thesis subject: “Study of micrometastasis in patients with early breast cancer: assessment of the effect of surgery on circulating tumour cells”.

I had the opportunity to develop further my skills regarding laparoscopic and bariatric surgery as Senior Clinical Fellow (March 2012 – July 2013) in the Upper GI unit, department of General Surgery, at Heartlands Hospital (NHS referral centre for bariatric and upper GI laparoscopic surgery) in Birmingham, UK.  From August 2013 till March 2014 I worked as locum Consultant in the same unit with main interest laparoscopic upper GI and bariatric surgery.

From March 2014 till October 2015 I was working as a locum Consultant in the surgical unit of Good Hope Hospital (Birmingham, UK). My main fields of interest were laparoscopic upper GI as well as colorectal and breast cases.

In November 2015 I was appointed as Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon at Heartlands Hospital, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS FT, with substantive post. My main workload involved laparoscopic upper GI and bariatric surgery.

I have maintained a strong research interest since my early years of training. I have published widely regarding laparoscopic surgery as well as breast surgery, receiving more than 2,100 citations so far, including pioneer research regarding action mechanisms of Sleeve Gastrectomy. I am a member of the Greek Society of Surgical Oncology since 2002. I am a member of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO), since 2006 and I have been a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (England) since 2016.
